Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot!

40mm by 25mm - Mosaic gold, smalti, turquoise in sterling silver

One of the things I love about spending summers in Greece is the consistency of the weather. I grew up on the Prairies in Alberta, Canada, and while summers there are absolutely lovely, the weather is all over the map. There can be cool cloud, scorching sun, and a thunderstorm all in the same day. One day will be lovely, mid twenties (high 70's for the Fahrenheit folks), the next day ten degrees cooler and rain. I've changed clothes four times in a single day out of necessity.

Santorini, on the other hand, is pretty consistent. From early June to September, the chance of rain is zero, or highly unlikely. There's barely even a cloud—to the point that I have a running joke with a friend: I occasionally send him a picture of a tiny cloud, with the caption "vacation ruined". Essentially, the weather is some form of hot, usually not too hot—my idea of perfection. As such, I rarely check the temperature forecast, as what matters in reality is the wind, which can get to gale force here. Most of the time, it's enough to provide lovely sea breezes, but it's worth knowing about the strong ones, as that's not a great day to plan a hike up the mountain, and sitting on the beach will only get you sandblasted. And when it drops to nothing, that's when the humidity creeps up, spreading it's uncomfortable wetness like a blanket that's been in storage too long. But mostly, there is wind, and it keeps the July and August temperatures enjoyable.

However, about once a summer, there is a heat wave. The temperatures soar, the wind dies, and the humidity shoots up almost as fast as people's tempers. It's sticky and unbearable—and it's why I don't host my workshops in the dead of summer! As you may have guessed, we are going through that right now. Almost no wind, 35 degree (95F) temps—great if you can sit with a beer in a frosty mug, not so great if you're serving that beer.

This year, however, our heat wave seems to be coming with a new twist. In a couple days, we are projected to go up to 39 or 40 (104). For starters, we've never seen it this high. Kosta, spoken with incredulity, "It doesn't get to 40 on Santorini." But on that same day, wind, gale force wind, up to 70km (45 miles) an hour is projected. While this happens, it doesn't happen when the temps skyrocket. I fear it will be like stepping out into a hair dryer. Thus, if you want to find me in a couple days,  I'll be hiding inside with my air conditioner, watering my poor plants at midnight, and drinking ALL the water.

Let's just hope there isn't a long term power outage (we already had a brief one this morning) or things will be excrutiatingly uncomfortable. If we manage to stay powered despite what will certainly an overabundance of electrical demand, I can continue to work on pieces for both my outdoor space that I'm trying to further beautify, or start getting the jewelry stocks back up again.

Work in progress on this custom order

I'll be announcing Santorini mosaic workshop dates for 2026 soon! While I will announce those dates here, I've also got a special email list going for those who want to make sure they get all the info. I'm considering adding early bird pricing this year, so if you're thinking about coming next year, you'll definitely want to get in on that.
