Pink Crystals-SOLD

2" by 2" on 5" metal sheet:  Smalti and chalcopyrite

Despite the name of this piece, there are no crystals in it.  But this "trasparenti" that is made by smalti manufacturers just looks so crystalline when cut. I am really loving this "shag carpet" technique I've been playing with.  There are so many ways of using it, and it has a new mosaic language that I am slowly learning.

Licks of Flame-SOLD

2" by 2" on 5" metal sheet:  Marble and dichroic glass

I always cut a little more marble than I need, so the background here is remnants too.  I love the juxtaposition of marble and dichroic glass.  I'm finding the trick to these little ones is to figure out how to keep them necessarily simple while keeping them interesting. Haven't figured out the rules of this yet, but working on it!

Iron #1

2" by 2" on 5" metal sheet:  Marble and metal
Email to Purchase for $60

I am occasionally bequeathed "stuff" from various people for use in a mosaic.  The metal piece in this one is from Frontstep Forge, who I mentioned a couple days ago.  I have several hundred of these; they are what is leftover after blacksmith Shawn Cunningham pulls a rivet. These are just the neatest pieces to use, as while they look intriguing on their own, they seem to naturally fit together very well also.

White Stack

2" by 2" on 5" metal sheet:  Smalti

Another instance where I have used previously cut materials.  The background pieces here were cut for a commission where I needed to create bricks on the side of a house.  I naturally had a few leftovers.

2" by 2" on 5.5" metal sheet:  Smalti and marble
Email to Purchase for $60

Another of the very wee mosaics.  This one is in browns and greens with a bit of pink.  I am finding with these little mosaics I like to try to use up leftover cut pieces from other projects.  These pieces came from some portrait practice I did a few years ago.

Study in Blue- SOLD

2" by 2" on 5.5" metal sheet:  Smalti and mosaic gold

These upcoming mosaics are a new sort of idea I've been working on.  These are much smaller than even my standard Mosaic a Day pieces, just 2" by 2".  It's a challenge to make something coherent and artful in such a small space, albeit an enjoyable one. The metal sheet comes from needing something to surround such a small artwork so that it takes up more visual space on the wall.  They are made for me by my friend Shawn Cunningham of Frontstep Forge. The surprising result of these metal backings is that these little pieces invite you to come closer to see their details.
