Grape Stomping

There aren't many places where one can still stomp grapes as was done in years past. Only one vineyard on the island of Santorini⏤Gavalas Winery⏤still produces one of its wines in this traditional way. The call went out in late August for stompers, and a big party ensued with locals, tourists, traditional music by La Ponta, dancing and of course, wine. I had the good fortune of being on the island at that time, and had a marvelous afternoon, though I must admit the experience was much slimier and more slippery than anticipated.

I love going wine tasting anywhere I am, but it's always especially enjoyable on Santorini. There is nothing better than grabbing a few friends, heading to one of the 14 vineyards on the island (I have yet to get to them all), and enjoying "a few" tastes of wine. Last summer, at a grape stomping event at Gavalas Winery, several bottles of this wine in an iconic blue bottle were consumed:

Gulliver meet World. World, meet Gulliver. Gulliver has been my patient and forebearing travel companion for 21 years, ever since he was gifted to me at my send off party when I was headed to Africa in 1997. He has cheekily snuck himself into a variety of photos over the years:

He told me recently that he thought I should let him help out with the business, and so I decided he could model this hat, er, ring for me.

He Had Blue Eyes

I noticed his eyes first. So very pale blue, with large irises, so that even in bright sunlight, and despite the eye crinkling smile he usually wore, they danced and flashed blue.

Then I noticed the way those blue eyes looked at a woman he loved. And I thought, "I hope someday a man looks at me like that."

A year later, those same blue eyes were looking at me like that, promising me forever, looking at me like maybe I was magic. I felt like magic.

Those blue eyes were so damn convincing...until they turned away cold. Then filled apparent remorse, luring me back, only to be followed by cold again.

Two things I have learned, having given everything to those flashing blue eyes.

Forever, apparently, is not that long.

Beauty exists in the coldest of places and though it's hard to forget once seen, it still exists in places far too frigid to call home.
