65mm by 20mm - Mosaic gold, filati, freshwater pearls in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Week's end!  I just love the combination of these icy blues and the deep red of the pearls. It's evidently a riff on my turquoise and red combination love.

By this time next week I'll be headed to Calgary to teach the first of 6 workshops in 6 weeks. I've been prepping in earnest for the last 2 months to make this all happen, and I'm really looking forward to coming out from under my rock to enjoy some cameraderie and extroversion. If you're still considering attending any of the workshops, you can find the details here. Not only do you learn the my method of jewelry making in my classes, but several people have recently mentioned they also came away with much better cutting skills than they arrived with. So if you need to hone your cutting techniques, a "Precision Mosaic Jewelry" workshop might just be the ticket.

Sunshiney Days

After several days of just gorgeous weather, we are back to rain, rain, rain. My little dog Maya is not please about this. "Mom, I wanna go outside!"

Luckily it looks like the weekend is slated to be salubrious, so hopefully I'll be able to drive my borrowed convertible with the top down once again before I leave.

Ring of Fire - SOLD

16mm diameter - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Another small circle for Deb, who I'm very excited to see in less than a week!  Because she's in the know, she ordered this circle pendant with "red gold". Due to still somewhat mystifying circumstances, Orsoni can no longer make the red gold. It just doesn't "turn out" anymore, for some reason. I lucked into a stash of it about 3 years ago, and I've been eking it out ever since. I hate knowing that I can't get more when what I have runs out.

Email for Purchase Info

I've been housesitting since the middle of January, and with rare exception, working every single day to get ready for the SAMA conference and all the workshops I'll be teaching in the States. So it was a wonderful break having a friend visit me for the last couple days. A  very nice change of pace indeed, and the weather was fantastic! We even drove around with the top down on the convertible. Thanks for all the fun, John!

Packs a Punch

12mm by 12mm- Mosaic gold, smalti, filati in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

I finally got the tiny square pendant bases back in stock, not a moment too soon. They really are very darling, these little dudes. Despite it's diminutive size this particular pendant, with it's bright warm red is very eye catching. It's also a bit on the textured side as well, so it's very interesting even though it's small. But "they" always say good things come in small packages, don't they?

50mm diameter - Mosaic gold, Venetian glass cabochon in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Welcome to Friday! Here's this week's large extravagant pendant creation that I've been saving to end the week on a bang. I'm really thrilled with it.

In addition to presenting you the best of my week, I'd also like to share my other accomplishment of the week...a major overhaul of my mosaic jewelry website.  I've added lots of new work to the portfolio, including adding the earrings, (which heretofore hadn't been on the website), added several pages, and generally changed up a few things. The main purpose was to have it bright and shiny for my Stateside teaching tour and for Europe in the spring. Let me know what you think!

Deb Loves Circles - SOLD

16mm diameter- Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

I have a good friend--also a mosaic artist--who loves my jewelry, and continues to be one of my biggest supporters. She always commissions small circle pendants. Always. (Okay, maybe once in awhile she gets an oval). This one was ordered as she was rushing out the door to India. Yes, really. Because that's just how Deb rolls.

The point of all of this is that I DO accept commissions, and if you been waiting for the perfect piece to appear in the blog and it hasn't, I am more than happy to create you the mosaic jewel that your heart desires. Just let me know!

Losing My Mind--SOLD

10mm by 10mm- Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

I'm going to be honest...unless specifically requested, I am never making this size and shape again. I only ordered two sets of these bases, and I am VERY glad I didn't order more. This is the last set, the other having been used for Copper Inanities

Why, you might ask? These are the most difficult things to do. Ever. They take far too long for their size, and those rounded corners are just a nightmare, because they are also bevelled. And while they are certainly pretty, they are just not worth the trouble.

And once again, the photos are astoundingly different from the actual. Sigh.

Okay, rant over.

Cherry Bomb

16mm by 16mm - Mosaic gold, smalti in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

This one is just so bright and cheery. I used the same colour palette as I did last week on Nostalgia for two--I always figure that if I'm cutting all those tiny pieces anyways, I might as well cut enough for a pendant as well.

In just 3 weeks I fly to Philadelphia for the SAMA conference! I can hardly wait to be having fun with my friends, meeting new people, teaching and vending. It's always such a good time.

28mm by 7mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver

These earrings are not quite as dark as portrayed here. For some reason Blogger occasionally distorts the colour on my pictures. I cannot for the life of me figure out why this would be, as they look correct on Facebook. Sigh. So unfortunately, you can't see just how truly elegant these slender earrings are. I just love this shape.

I've been really busy lately working not only just the jewelry, but also several other mosaic pieces, as well as building a brand new website. It's been YEARS since I did a proper overhaul, and it's long overdue. As soon as it goes live, I'll let you know the details!

30mm diameter - Mosaic gold, filati in sterling silver

I love how this one turned out. While I was at di Mosaico in November, I picked up the neat multicoloured filati used in this piece. These are called buds, and they are part of some really cool traditional floral filati that they now have. Usually these are used for making floralscapes, but unsurprisingly, I decided to think outside the box and use them simply as abstract tesserae.

If you want to play with some of this groovy material and learn how to use it, I'm teaching my Precision Mosaic Jewelry workshop at di Mosaico in early April.

Nostalgia for Two--SOLD

14mm by 10mm - Mosaic gold, smalti in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Ordinarily I listen to music in whatever studio I'm currently occupying while I create mosaics. I don't tend towards silence, as I have had a bit of tinnitus lately, and silence can end up annoying as a result.

However, this pair of earrings was created under uncommon circumstances, during a Skype visit with an old friend, Joel Finnestad. He now lives in Taiwan, and happened to message me out of the blue shortly before I went into the studio, which was rather late at night for him. The messages soon turned into a Skype call, but not wanting to skip out on my workday, I simply took him into the studio with me. The following several hours involved plenty of catching up, reminiscing, scheming, and yes, singing. Thanks for the great time, Joel. Whatever beauty these earrings have is partly your doing.

25mm diameter - Mosaic gold, dichroic glass in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

I love this "acid green" coloured gold that Orsoni makes. It's just so vibrant. It pairs so nicely with several colours of dichroic glass as well, so that's usually how I end up using it.

I also don't think I've announced that I have an upcoming workshop in my hometown of Edmonton, AB, Canada, April 10-12. It's a brand new workshop and I'm really excited about it. "Rock and Forge" will be all about mixing marble, smalti, and minerals. I'm doing registrations for this one directly, so if you are interested, please drop me an email. I'm also teaching this same workshop at the end of March in Tucson at the wonderful di Mosaico headquarters, though it's called "Tucson Mixed Media" there.

Blue Velvet - SOLD

14mm by 10mm - Mosaic gold, smalti in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

These are done in a similar, though slightly different blend, to the "Fond Memories" pendant I posted last week. I hadn't done any of the oval earrings yet this year, so I thought it was high time, given that a whole month has gone by already. Like the "Blades of Grass", I think these would surreptiously go with anything.

As an aside, my thanks go out to my friend Vicki Hansen Burkhart of M3 Gallery. She is brilliant at coming up with names for artwork. I was stumped on these--naming pieces is not my forte--and she handily supplied the splendid moniker for them.

At the End of the Rainbow - SOLD

16mm diameter- Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

I realized the other day that I haven't worked in "gold" gold in quite some time, with the exception of a drib or drab here and there. So today I decided to do a simple gold blend. One of the golds used has a bit of texture to it, which gave the piece a rustic look that I quite like.

At the time of writing, there are still spaces available in my "Precision Mosaic Jewelry" workshop in Calgary, AB, Canada. It's being hosted by the lovely Michelena Bamford in her darling space, Wolf Willow Studio. Please feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested. It's now less than a month away, and I'm already looking forward to teaching in Calgary.

Venetian Dreams - SOLD

48mm by 35mm - Mosaic gold and Venetian glass cabochon in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

Carnevale has already begun in Venice, and someday I'd like to be there for it. The masks, the costumes, and frankly, all the pomp and circumstance, would be just too much fun. So in honour of that party to end all parties, I created this piece. Designing pieces with these Venetian cabs is wonderfully challenging, and my cutting skills are certainly stretched in their execution. I must say, the black gold I purchased in Venice this summer is very inky.

Fond Memories - SOLD

16mm by 16mm - Mosaic gold, smalti, filati in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

This one reminds me of the colours of the Aegean sea, and the beautiful blue the Greeks tend to paint the trim on their buildings. I am very much looking forward to the warm Greek sun, the hospitality, the food, and the raki, all of which I'll enjoy again in the spring.

On a completely different topic, the top photo looks entirely different than the picture I have on my computer. On my computer, the colours and tones are very much the same in both photos. But on the Internet, the top one looks extremely saturated. This makes absolutely no sense to me why this would happen. Hmmm....

Rising Temperatures

18mm by 13mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

What is it about the colour red that makes me want to use a racy name? Hmmm....

This is a new earring base for me, a bit bigger than the others. I tend towards larger jewelry myself, so figured perhaps other folks would prefer them as well. And red? Well, red is always enjoyable.

A Few of My Favourite Things--SOLD

20mm diameter - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

I profess, I have a love of the colours turquoise and red together, and this piece fell victim to that. I had actually thought I would get another row of turquoise in, then finish off with a round filato in the the centre. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the middle I realized I had just no room to execute my original plan. Scrambling, I found a piece of turquoise that was the precise fit for the void I needed to fill. The result is even better than my original idea. I love those moments of serendipity.

Light of Day--SOLD

28mm by 7 mm - Mosaic gold in sterling silver
Email for Purchase Info

It's a brand new week, and anything can happen!  I'm glad I decided to do another gradient on these long earring bases. I purposefully used just a touch of gold at the bottom, and I love how it looks.

As some of you may know the American Mosaic Summit, also known as the SAMA conference, is coming up in Philadelphia in just a little over a month. I'm prepping and excited already. I'll be teaching my "Precision Mosaic Jewelry" as a one day workshop there, and as far as I know, there are still a few spots left. Visit the SAMA website to learn all about the conference!
